Un-Wasted Suffering

by daperretupdated on May 6, 2020May 6, 2020Leave a Comment on Un-Wasted Suffering

I have had two sweet friends this Spring lose babies due to miscarriage.  I say due to miscarriage because that is the medical name given when the baby dies in utero.  But is that really what is the cause?  Every once in a while my kids ask why our third child died in miscarriage. How …

  • #Hope*Writers Challenge Day 7 = CelebrateAs human beings we love to celebrate. We look forward to milestones accomplished and new chapters in life. We relish in the air of hope and possibilities.Celebration not only fills our souls, but can also create a powerful momentum for forward movement. It can propel a new beginning into full movement like the ribbon cutting of a new business, the launch of a new church, the swearing in of a new, elected official. It can unstick us from bad habits, past failures, confusion and despair.Celebration brings community together. Whether it be a graduation, birth of a baby, a sport’s team win, a wedding, even a “celebration of life” at a loved one's memorial. We are made for community, and it is remarkable how we crave these moments of pure joy, hope and satisfaction. At the root of it all, I believe we celebrate because God celebrates. The Bible says he created men and women in his image, in his likeness of character. He is in the business of hope and joy, and so we long for that reality of his being to resonate deep in our souls. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” LOUD singing! God longs to celebrate us. He longs to have intimacy with us and shower us with his love. Celebration in the context of community is at God’s core. And so it is at ours too.May you find reason to celebrate this year. Whether it be a new job, a new house, returning to IN PERSON anything, getting the vaccine, paying off debt, traveling to see family - may you be filled with love, hope and joy.

This picture. Remember when going on Cruises was a thing??? #disneydreamcruise
This past summer I read through @rebekahlyons book “Rhythms of Renewal” with a group of friends. Rebekah encourages readers to take Inventory of their rhythms before diving into the book-What is Wrong, What is Right, What is Missing, What is Confusing. For 2021, here is my abbreviated Inventory.
What is Right: Settling back into a quiet, reflective writing time in the mornings. Getting my diet back on track to reduce Lupus inflammation. Welcoming new students to my music studio. Teaching a full schedule. Finishing house projects with my husband. Watching a fun new series, Bless This Mess, at night with said husband. Playing with the puppy throughout the day - never a dull moment. My son gets to go to school in person 5 days a week. We are paying off debt using the @daveramsey #babysteps and are killing it!
What is Wrong-tons of pain and inflammation in my body, including a herniated L5/S1 disc, and pain in my fingers that prevents me from playing long periods of time with my instruments. Running is off the table for several more months. I have not returned to the gym yet due to COVID. Daughter not at school in person. I have two teenagers in my house now. Lord help us!
What is Missing - IN PERSON EVERYTHING!!! Being with friends, worshipping at church, traveling to see family. Sleep.
What is Confusing - When will vaccines roll out to auto-immune patients? When can we stop wearing these blasted masks? Are we safe hanging out with friends un-masked? Should I return to the gym? Will COVID end this year????I don’t know about you, but 2020 completely threw off so many of my rhythms. My hope is that 2021 finds many back in place, with some improvements and additions. Starting with sleep….goodnight everyone.@hopewriters #hopewriterlife #rhythmsofrenewal #daveramseybabysteps #blessthismess
  • #Hope*Writers Challenge Day 5 = Fresh
Everyone deserves a fresh start. Or so the saying goes. But is that true? In our heart of hearts do we want life to be fair for everyone? What about the lowest of character, the murderer, the perpetual gossip, the adulterer, the corrupt politician? Can someone be far too gone to deserve mercy, a fresh start?I have spent too many hours inside a juvenile courtroom for my son. I have felt the weight of condemnation that pours out from the opposing side. Did you know that the point of the juvenile court system is 1.) reunification with family if possible and 2.) correction of behavior so that juveniles do not end up in the prison pipeline? But I will honestly tell you that for 2 years it felt like some parties put my son in a box and labeled him “Criminal,” with no hope whatsoever of the possibility of change. As a 12 year old. They were convinced that he could not and would not change. That he was destined for destruction. What led them to hold onto this belief? Fear? Ignorance of his disability? A belief that once a criminal, always a criminal? An unwillingness to admit their own struggles and mistakes? A need to control their environment because if they let go then their world might implode? I don’t know.We fought for over two years to educate these parties, rehabilitate our son and bring him home. At our last court meeting the District Attorney said to my son, “You have proven me wrong and I am proud of the work you have done to change.” Just as God declares someone forgiven and declared righteous, the magistrate that day closed our case and gave my son his freedom and life back. The penalty for his sins were paid for, and he was declared free. That day, my son was given a fresh start.

  • #Hope*Writers Challenge Day 4 = 21
An Open Letter to 2021: Do your worst because we are ready.
You will not catch us unprepared this year. We will be stocked with our toilet paper, masks, hand sanitizer and hand soap. We will be ready with resumes in hand in case jobs fall through. We will be ready to adapt and be flexible. Never again will we say there is only one way to run a business, to do school, to do church. Your compadre 2020 may have tried to mow us down, crush our spirits and lead us into isolation. Yet humankind is resilient, strong and brave. We came through the fire refined, more aware, and more grateful. You will not isolate us - we will find a way to come together and have community. You will not steal our education - we will learn to do school a different way. You will not rob us - we will do the smart and hard work to batten down the hatches on our budgets and not take our finances for granted. You will not destroy our family - we will fight to find help, to communicate, to listen, to be humble. You will not stomp out hope - we will trust in a God who is greater than our circumstances, knowing that He is good. He is our refuge and strong tower in times of great trouble (Psalm 46:1). And you will not annihilate our peace - our peace as individuals, our peace as families, communities and as a country. Because we know that God is able to give a peace that surpasses all understanding, that is incomprehensible, and comes in the darkest of times (Philippians 4:7). 2021, we are prepared because we trust in the One who can move mountains. We are ready to learn, adapt and grow. 2020 prepared us for you, 2021. So bring it on.
